Kubuntu and Automatix

Kubuntu and Automatix Kubuntu is the ´KDE´ version of Ubuntu, Linux for human beings.
Linux for the desktop has never been better.
I choose Kubuntu because it looks a bit more like windows, as Ubuntu looks like Mac.
Go to their website http://www.kubuntu.com/ , download the .iso , burn a CD and get going.
Once installed it is time for the extras, called Automatix, http://www.getautomatix.com/
Update 1,
-
when i got the popup question ´do you want to upgrade to feisty?´ i clicked yes.
stupid me.
some files didnt download, and after letting the computer stand for a night undisturbed in its harddisc rumble, i boot it and the grapical interface of X didnt work.
after some searching on ubuntus forums i found out this automatix was probably the dobad,
because it changes some things to ubuntu that makes it crash during s.
so be carefull, backup all your data before you start.
i also found this line of command,
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
which lead me on to the next problem,
that the configuration program could not write to /etx/X11/xorg.conf
so i went there with cd /etx.... and copied the old file with sudo cp oldfile newfile to some backup, and found an older backup i made before and copied that back
if you dont do sudo it wont copy. that made me have access again to my computer.

Update 2,
i realised that solving problems probably would take more time than a new install.
so i downloaded feisty, burned a cd, installed it cleanly.
this time no propriety nvidea drivers and nu automatrix, because it could mess up future kubuntu s.
google earth install:
download it from google (google on google earth)
put it in folder, open up a konsole window,
go to the folder with cd pathtothefolder (hint, copy paste it from the addressbar from konqueror)
now type in the konsole window:
chmod +x GoogleEarthLinux.bin
./GoogleEarthLinux.bin
and there you are, it is installing. without my nvidea drivers it is very slow and flickering,
but rather that than future trouble

now you got the Kubuntu CD,
set your bios to boot first from CD (go into bios by pressing del)

the install is pretty forward, and will take you 15 minutes further.
if all is well and working, install the extras.

note, on ubuntu you use ´gedit´, on kubunto its ´kate´
´sudo´ means superuser do. nice to know...

automatix2
ubuntu wiki
open a terminal window, startmenu,system,konsole.
sudo kate /etc/apt/sources.list
add lines
## Automatix repo
deb http://www.getautomatix.com/apt edgy main
save it, now open a terminal window, startmenu, system, konsole.
copy and paste (right mouseclick, paste) each of the 3 lines and hit enter
wget http://www.getautomatix.com/apt/key.gpg.asc
gpg import key.gpg.asc
gpg export armor 521A9C7C | sudo apt-key add -
now Update APT by doing the same for the following line
sudo aptitude
now install with following line, same procedure, want to continue, y
sudo aptitude install automatix2
now you can use it, startmenu, system, automatrix

first updating the nvidea drivers for my board.
restart. went fine.

hearing about troubles integrating FireFox with java,
i will install FireFox first

now install java runtime 1.5 from automatix
beware, you will get a coloured confirmation page,
answer this with ´right arrow´ ´enter´ ´left arrow´ ´enter´
precisely like that so you will confirm, otherwise you're in trouble.
(had my installer for all programs stuck...)

then its skype, a 10 second install.
start skype under startmenu, internet fill out your name and password and ready. do a test call just to be sure.

Linux without the Gimp is like windows without Photoshop.
that said, it took longer to type that than to install via the basic ´add remove programs´

while we are at it, search for ftp, now install gFTP, under ´any suite´ and not ´KDE´ just like the Gimp.

eh why not Google earth, nice end of the day.

ftp
add/remove programs select any suite instead of KDE
search for ´ftp´ and check gFTP, apply changes.
can be found in startmenu under ´Internet´

OK that went fine.
i must confess though that i first installed it and played around a bit,
before doing the final install, straight following these points.
next some tips.

skype, when you are not using automatix.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Skype
go to startmenu, system, adapt manager, give password.
then click adept, manage repositories, tab third party software. click add button and add this line:
deb http://download.skype.com/linux/repos/debian/ stable non-free
click add, then click apply at the top menu and fetch s.
now you're back in adept, search for skype, right click on the ´not installed´ and select ´request install´. again apply changes.
can be found in startmenu under ´Internet´

typed wrong in apt and apt stopped working
sudo cp -p /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list_backup
sudo kate /etc/apt/sources.list
now you can remove the wrong line.

logitech webcam QuickCam Messenger
ID 046d:08f0 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Messenger
see instructions at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=81057
well never got to install it, gets too complicated as i also want to stream it.

smc printer port
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/smc/3.3_The_Printer_Port
never mind. too complicated and problems with the smc firmware

share files with a windows machine
turn on filesharing on a windows machine, and on the linux machine go there using
smb://192.168.2.22/
or whatever the ip is of the win.machine.

install nvidia drivers https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia
they say to use ´System -> Administration -> Restricted Devices Manager´
that is not present in kubuntu, so using the 6.10 install version
first backup the existing config
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backupbeforenvidia
then install the driver, for me and most computers it is the nvidia-glx-legacy driver,
with adept searching on nvidia, after that close adept.
now open a terminal window and copy paste the command:
sudo nvidia-xconfig
restart the computer and cross your fingers...

apt gets stuck
sudo dpkg configure -a
or
Try Code:
sudo apt-get
and then Code:
sudo apt-get install -f
if you still get the same results post the output of Code:
sudo ps ax
